Wood Fires and Class A Fire Safety
What Is a Wood Fire?
Wood fires are one of the most common types of fire and are classified as Class A fires. Class A fires involve ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, cardboard and textiles.
Although wood fires may appear simple, they can be dangerous. They can spread quickly, generate intense heat and reignite if the burning material is not fully cooled and extinguished.
Demonstrating a Wood Fire
In this demonstration, a wood mixture fire is used to show how quickly burning wood can develop heat and how difficult it can be to extinguish completely.
Traditionally, a wood fire may require a large amount of water to put out the flames and remove the heat from the material. This process is often called damping down.
Using the Zenova FX500 on a Wood Fire
The Zenova FX500 fire extinguisher was used during the demonstration to put out the flames and cool the wood. Even though it is a small 500 ml extinguisher, the FX fluid helped cool the wood quickly enough for it to be handled shortly after the fire was extinguished.
Why Wood Fires Can Be Difficult to Extinguish
Wood fires can be challenging because heat can become embedded deep inside the material. The outside of the wood may appear extinguished, but hidden pockets of heat and fire can remain inside.
This is particularly important with materials such as wooden pallets, where fire can spread into gaps and deeper sections. If these areas are not fully cooled, the fire may continue to smoulder or reignite.
How FX Fluid Works
The FX fluid works by helping to tackle two parts of the fire triangle. It helps to cool the burning material and also helps to suffocate the fire.
When the fluid comes into contact with hot material, such as wood or metal, it cools rapidly. This helps reduce the amount of extinguishing agent required compared with traditional methods.
Environmental Benefits
Using large amounts of water on a wood fire can create contaminated run-off, which may affect the environment. Because the FX fluid can be effective in smaller quantities, it may help to reduce water use and lower environmental impact during fire control.
Key Safety Message
Wood fires must be fully extinguished and cooled to reduce the risk of reignition. Always use the correct fire extinguisher for the type of fire and follow appropriate fire safety procedures.
