Large Diesel Fire Demonstration Using the Zenova FX 9-Litre Fire Extinguisher

Large Diesel Fuel Fires

Large diesel fires present a significant firefighting challenge. Once fully established, they generate extremely high temperatures, produce intense radiant heat and can spread rapidly if not controlled.

In many situations, conventional portable fire extinguishers may not provide sufficient extinguishing capacity, meaning multiple extinguishers could be required to control the fire.

Demonstrating a Large Diesel Tray Fire

This demonstration used a large 8-metre circular diesel fire tray. The diesel was ignited and allowed to develop into a fully established fire before firefighting began.

The purpose of the demonstration was to show how a single 9-litre Zenova FX fire extinguisher could be used to tackle a substantial fuel fire under controlled demonstration conditions.

How the Fire Was Extinguished

Rather than directing the extinguishing agent straight into the centre of the flames, the firefighter worked around the outside edge of the fire.

As the Zenova FX fluid was applied, it produced a rapid cooling effect. The flames gradually reduced in size, allowing the firefighter to bring the fire under control before fully extinguishing it.

As the fire diminished, the remaining flames were concentrated into a much smaller area, making them easier to extinguish safely.

The Cooling Effect of Zenova FX

A key feature demonstrated was the rapid cooling ability of the FX extinguishing agent. Once applied, the temperature of the burning fuel reduced quickly, allowing the surrounding area to cool as the fire was extinguished.

Following extinguishment, the remaining extinguishing agent was used to cool the tray further, helping reduce the risk of any remaining hot spots.

Comparison with Traditional Foam Extinguishers

Traditional foam extinguishers work by creating a foam blanket over the surface of the fuel. While effective in many situations, prolonged exposure to very high temperatures may require additional foam to maintain the protective blanket.

During this demonstration, the Zenova FX extinguisher rapidly reduced the fire and cooled the fuel using a single 9-litre extinguisher under controlled test conditions.

Important Fire Safety Considerations

Large fuel fires should only be tackled if it is safe to do so. Portable fire extinguishers are primarily intended for dealing with small fires in their early stages or to help create a safe escape route.

If a fire is spreading rapidly, producing significant heat or smoke, or blocking your exit, leave the area immediately, activate the fire alarm if appropriate and call the fire and rescue service.

Key Learning Points

  • Diesel fires can reach extremely high temperatures.
  • A controlled application of extinguishing agent can improve firefighting effectiveness.
  • Cooling burning fuel is essential to reduce the risk of continued combustion or reignition.
  • Always maintain a clear escape route when using a fire extinguisher.
  • Never attempt to fight a fire that is beyond your level of training or the capability of a portable extinguisher.
