Diesel Fires and Safe Fire Extinguisher Use
How Diesel Fires Differ from Petrol Fires
Diesel fires behave differently from petrol fires because diesel has a higher flashpoint and is less volatile. This means it is generally more difficult to ignite than petrol.
However, once a diesel fire starts, it can produce intense heat, thick smoke and rapidly spreading flames if it is not controlled quickly and safely.
Demonstrating a Diesel Fire
For this demonstration, a 3-metre fire tray was prepared with water in the base and diesel floating on the surface. This created a large fuel fire suitable for demonstrating the capabilities of the Zenova FX 6-litre fire extinguisher.
The fire was allowed to develop until it was fully established, creating a large and intense blaze before firefighting began.
Using the Zenova FX 6-Litre Fire Extinguisher
The demonstration showed how a single 6-litre Zenova FX extinguisher was able to extinguish a substantial diesel fire in approximately 20 to 25 seconds.
As the FX fluid was applied, it rapidly cooled the burning fuel while producing a fine mist that formed a thin layer over the surface of the diesel. This helped to cool the fire and reduce the oxygen reaching the fuel, assisting in extinguishing the flames.
How the FX Fluid Works
The FX extinguishing agent helps tackle two elements of the fire triangle. It works by:
- Cooling the burning fuel and surrounding surfaces.
- Reducing the oxygen supply by creating a fine mist over the surface of the fuel.
These combined actions help bring the fire under control quickly and reduce the likelihood of the fire continuing to burn.
Comparison with Traditional Foam Extinguishers
Traditional foam extinguishers work by creating a blanket over the fuel surface. While this can be effective, prolonged heat may eventually break through the foam layer, requiring additional extinguishing agent to maintain protection.
During the demonstration, the Zenova FX 6-litre extinguisher extinguished the fire rapidly, with no immediate signs of the fire reigniting after extinguishment.
Benefits of a 6-Litre Fire Extinguisher
The demonstration highlighted that a single 6-litre Zenova FX extinguisher was capable of dealing with a relatively large diesel fire. This may reduce the need for multiple extinguishers during the initial response, provided the fire remains small enough to tackle safely.
Fire extinguishers should only be used on fires that are safe to fight. If the fire is growing rapidly, producing excessive smoke or blocking your escape route, evacuate immediately and call the fire and rescue service.
Key Safety Message
Diesel fires can become extremely dangerous once established. Always use an extinguisher that is suitable for the type of fire, maintain a clear escape route at all times, and never attempt to fight a fire that is beyond the capability of a portable fire extinguisher.
