Supporting Mental Health at Work: HSE Guidance and Mental Health First Aid
What the HSE Recommends
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) encourages employers to approach mental health risk management with the same importance as physical health and safety. Key recommendations include:
- Conducting mental health risk assessments alongside physical ones
- Ensuring first aid provision includes mental health support
- Training designated mental health first aiders
- Encouraging open dialogue about mental wellbeing in the workplace
- Providing staff with resources and signposting to professional support services
Although appointing mental health first aiders is not currently a legal requirement, many organisations recognise the value and implement it voluntarily to support staff wellbeing and foster a supportive workplace culture.
What Does Mental Health First Aid Training Involve?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training equips individuals with the tools and confidence to support colleagues in emotional or psychological distress. The training typically includes:
- Understanding mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress, and PTSD
- Recognising early warning signs, such as mood changes or withdrawal
- Learning how to hold supportive conversations and listen without judgement
- Responding to mental health crises like panic attacks, suicidal ideation, or self-harm
- Signposting to professional help, including GPs, mental health charities, or employee assistance programmes
Mental health first aiders are not therapists or counsellors, but they offer vital first-line support and play a key role in early intervention and employee wellbeing.
