Minimum First Aid Kit Requirements for Workplaces

Understanding HSE First Aid Kit Requirements

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers have a legal obligation to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment in the workplace. The minimum standard for compliance is the provision of an HSE First Aid Kit, available in three standard sizes depending on the number of employees:

  • 1-10 Person Kit – Ideal for small, low-risk workplaces such as offices, small retail shops, or beauty salons.
  • 1-20 Person Kit – Designed for medium-sized businesses with moderate risk, including schools, warehouses, and workshops.
  • 1-50 Person Kit – Suitable for larger businesses or higher-risk environments, such as factories, construction sites, and industrial settings.

Essential Features of HSE First Aid Kits

Each HSE First Aid Kit must be:

  • Clearly marked and easily accessible to all employees.
  • Regularly checked to ensure supplies are present and in good condition.
  • Replenished immediately after use to maintain readiness.

Beyond the Minimum Requirements

While HSE kits meet the minimum legal standards, some workplaces, especially those with higher risks, may require more comprehensive first aid kits or additional emergency supplies. These will be covered in the next section to help you fully prepare your business for every eventuality.
