HSE First Aid Kits: Minimum Requirements and Practical Considerations

Understanding HSE First Aid Kits

The HSE first aid kits are designed to meet the minimum requirements outlined in the First Aid at Work Regulations. These kits have been a workplace standard for many years and provide the essential items needed to respond to basic injuries.

Kit Sizes Based on Employee Numbers

HSE kits are categorised according to the number of employees:

  • 1–10 employees
  • 1–20 employees
  • 1–50 employees

Each size contains the same types of items, but larger kits include greater quantities.

Typical Contents of an HSE First Aid Kit

  • First aid guidance sheet with basic treatment information
  • Large and medium dressings with integrated gauze pads
  • Eye pads for ocular injuries
  • Triangular bandages for slings and immobilisation
  • Safety pins for securing bandages
  • Individually wrapped plasters
  • Cleansing wipes (limited quantity)
  • One pair of gloves per kit

Limitations of the HSE Kit

Although they meet legal minimums, HSE kits have limitations:

  • Only one pair of gloves, insufficient for multiple casualties or replacement during treatment
  • Limited wipes and plasters compared to BSI kits
  • No micropore tape for securing dressings

Refilling and Maintaining HSE Kits

Regularly check the use-by dates of contents. Refill kits are available for easy restocking to ensure compliance and preparedness.

Recommendation

While HSE kits tick compliance boxes, organisations are encouraged to upgrade to BSI first aid kits for better coverage and safer responses in emergencies.
