Rapid blood test for Ebola has been approved

The World Health Organisation has approved a blood test that can give a result on if a patient has Ebola within minutes not hours.  Existing tests can take 12-24 hours to get a result which can cause problems with care management in this period.  This new test can give a result in just 15 minutes.  Ebola has killed nearly 10,000 people and by getting a faster result, recourses can be allocated better to the actual cases.

Extra funding pledged by government of £300 million

David Cameron has pledged £300 million to help fund Dementia research and training.  There are 850,ooo people living with Dementia in the UK and this figure is expected to exceed 1 million within 10 years. The government said a separate multimillion-pound fund would be launched within weeks to help establish an international investment scheme to discover new drugs and treatments that could slow the onset of dementia, or even deliver a cure, by 2025.

Helicopter Team Rescues Dog

A dog is in good health after being pulled from a swollen river in a dramatic airborne rescue.  The small brown pup, whose name is unknown, was spotted floating down Los Angeles River following thunderstorms on Friday afternoon.  Witnesses said the dog, thought to be a Labrador cross, was swept about a mile downriver near the Burbank border in California. The rescue operation – which was caught on camera – saw a Los Angeles firefighter lowered on a cable from a helicopter before swimming towards the pup.  Footage then cuts to the shivering animal.  The seven-year-old dog, who was not microchipped, …

Dramatic Rise’ In Liver Disease Deaths

Deaths from liver disease have increased 400% in the last 40 years, according to the British Liver Trust, which is calling for screening to help combat the problem.   The organisation is warning that costs from the disease could rise above £1bn a year unless action is taken. It has launched its fourth annual Love Your Liver campaign with a call for the Government to back universal liver health screening in primary care and a national liver health prevention campaign.
