How to Use the HeartHero Elliot AED in an Emergency
The HeartHero Elliot AED is designed to guide rescuers through the essential steps of responding to a sudden cardiac arrest. In an emergency, early defibrillation and high-quality CPR can make a vital difference, so it is important to act quickly, stay calm and follow the AED voice prompts carefully.
Check the Scene and Call Emergency Services
Before using any automated external defibrillator, make sure the area is safe for you, the casualty and anyone nearby. If the casualty is unresponsive and not breathing normally, ask someone to call emergency services immediately and bring the AED.
If you are alone, call emergency services as soon as possible, activate the AED and begin care according to your training. In a cardiac arrest, every second matters, so the priority is to get the AED switched on, apply the pads and follow the instructions.
Turning on the HeartHero Elliot AED
Place the HeartHero Elliot AED beside the casualty. The device can be activated by pressing the green power button, or it may switch on when the red handle is pulled to access the electrode pads.
Once switched on, the AED will begin giving clear spoken instructions. Follow each prompt calmly and step by step.
Applying the AED Pads Correctly
Remove the electrode pads from the packaging and peel them away from the liner. Prepare the casualty’s chest if needed, then place the pads exactly as shown on the diagrams.
For an adult casualty, place one pad on the upper right side of the chest and the other on the lower left side of the chest.
For a child, place one pad on the front of the chest and the other in the centre of the back. If the child weighs under 25 kg, press the child button so the AED adjusts the shock level and guidance for paediatric use.
CPR, Analysis and Shock Delivery
Once the pads are attached, continue to follow the AED prompts. The HeartHero Elliot AED provides audible instructions and a metronome to help guide CPR compressions.
When the AED analyses the heart rhythm, stop CPR and make sure nobody is touching the casualty. Movement can interfere with the analysis and may affect the device’s ability to assess the heart rhythm correctly.
If a shock is required, the AED will guide the rescuer through the process. Make sure everyone stands clear while the device analyses and delivers a shock. After analysis or shock delivery, restart CPR immediately when instructed.
Continue Until Help Arrives
Continue the cycle of CPR, AED analysis and following the device prompts until emergency services arrive, the casualty shows clear signs of recovery, or you are physically unable to continue.
After Using the AED
When the rescue is complete, the HeartHero Elliot AED can be turned off by pressing and holding the green power button. If the green light is flashing rapidly, do not remove or unscrew the battery door, as the device may still be transferring event data.
Once the flashing has stopped, the AED can be serviced. After use, the electrode pads and batteries should be replaced, and the device should be checked to make sure it has returned to a ready state.
Why Fast AED Use Matters
Using an AED quickly during sudden cardiac arrest gives the casualty the best possible chance of survival. By turning on the HeartHero Elliot AED, applying the pads correctly, using child mode where appropriate and continuing CPR when prompted, rescuers can provide immediate life-saving care while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
