Using the HeartHero Elliot AED on Adults and Children

Can the HeartHero Elliot AED Be Used on Children?

The HeartHero Elliot AED can be used on both adults and children. When treating a child, the device includes a dedicated child mode, which adjusts the treatment and guidance to make it suitable for smaller patients.

Child mode should be used for casualties who weigh under approximately 25 kg, which will usually include infants and younger children.

How Child Mode Works

When child mode is activated, the HeartHero Elliot AED reduces the shock energy so it is more suitable for a child’s heart.

To use the AED:

  • Turn on the AED by pressing the green power button or pulling the red handle
  • Press the child button before applying the electrode pads
  • Once child mode is activated, the AED will adjust its treatment and voice guidance accordingly

Pad Placement for Children

When using an AED on a child, electrode pad placement may be different from adult pad placement.

For larger children, the pads may be placed in the same position as for adults:

  • One pad on the upper right side of the chest
  • One pad on the lower left side of the chest, below the armpit

Pad Placement for Smaller Children and Infants

For smaller children and infants under 25 kg, the pads should be placed so they do not overlap.

In these cases, use the front-and-back pad position:

  • Place one pad on the centre of the chest, slightly offset to the casualty’s left side
  • Place the other pad on the centre of the back, between the shoulder blades

Preparing the Child Before Applying the Pads

Before placing the pads, make sure the child’s chest is bare and dry.

Remove any clothing that may interfere with pad placement and ensure the pads are firmly attached to the skin. Good pad contact is essential so the AED can analyse the heart rhythm and deliver treatment if required.

Following the AED Prompts

Once child mode is activated and the pads are attached, follow the voice prompts from the HeartHero Elliot AED just as you would during an adult rescue.

The device will analyse the heart rhythm and advise whether a shock is needed. If CPR is required, perform chest compressions according to your training while continuing to follow the AED prompts.

The AED will guide you through the whole process, including when to stop for analysis and when to resume chest compressions.

Why Using an AED on a Child Matters

It is important to remember that using an AED on a child in cardiac arrest is far better than not using one at all.

If a child suffers sudden cardiac arrest, early CPR and early defibrillation can be life-saving. The HeartHero Elliot AED is designed to guide the rescuer step by step, helping them provide the best possible care during a critical emergency.

After Using the AED

After the AED has been used, the electrode pads and batteries should be replaced if required, and the device should be checked to ensure it has returned to a ready state.

This helps make sure the HeartHero Elliot AED is prepared and available for the next emergency.
