Safe Storage and Handling of Abrasive Wheels

Correct storage and careful handling of abrasive wheels are essential for safety. Abrasive wheels are relatively fragile, and even a small knock, crack, or drop can weaken the wheel and greatly increase the risk of wheel burst during use.

Suitable Storage Conditions

Abrasive wheels should always be stored in a dry, clean, and well-ventilated environment. Storage areas must protect wheels from:

  • Moisture and damp conditions
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Direct sunlight

Moisture can weaken the bonding material, while excessive heat may cause distortion or damage. Wherever possible, wheels should remain in their original packaging to protect them from accidental impacts.

Correct Positioning in Storage

Abrasive wheels must be stored on a flat, stable surface to prevent distortion.

  • Large wheels should be stored upright in suitable racks
  • Smaller wheels and discs may be stored flat on shelves or in drawers

Wheels must not be stacked in a way that places excessive weight on lower wheels. Any pressure that could cause bending or distortion must be avoided.

Protection from Contamination

Wheels should be stored away from oils, greases, solvents, and chemicals. Contact with these substances can:

  • Weaken the wheel structure
  • Contaminate the abrasive surface
  • Reduce cutting or grinding performance

Safe Handling of Abrasive Wheels

Careful handling is just as important as correct storage. Abrasive wheels should never be:

  • Dropped
  • Knocked against hard surfaces
  • Carried loosely with other tools

Even a minor impact can cause hairline cracks that may not be visible but can lead to dangerous failure at operating speed.

Carrying and Moving Wheels

When carrying abrasive wheels, especially larger ones, always use both hands and support them securely. If handling multiple wheels or discs:

  • Separate them with cardboard or foam
  • Prevent them from knocking together

After any handling, movement, or transport, wheels should be checked for damage before use.

Removing Wheels from Storage

When taking wheels out of storage, do not slide them across rough surfaces, as this can damage the edges or weaken the wheel. Always lift wheels carefully instead.

If wheels are transported between sites, ensure they are properly packaged, cushioned, and protected inside a suitable box or container.

Organisation and Stock Control

Keeping abrasive wheels well organised is an important safety measure. Mixing new and used wheels can lead to:

  • Using worn or damaged wheels
  • Selecting the wrong wheel for the task
  • Using out-of-date wheels

Storage areas should be clearly labelled, and stock should be managed so that only correct, undamaged, and in-date wheels are used.
