Eye and Face Protection When Using Machinery
Protecting your eyes when using machinery such as grinders, cutters, and other power tools is absolutely essential. Flying debris, dust, sparks, and splashes can all cause serious eye injuries if suitable protection is not worn.
There are several types of eye and face protection available, and in some situations, a combination of protections may be required.
Safety Glasses
The most basic form of eye protection is safety glasses. These are available in clear or tinted versions and are designed to wrap around the eyes.
- Provide basic protection from flying debris
- Lightweight and comfortable for short tasks
- Available in clear or tinted options
While safety glasses offer reasonable protection, they do not fully seal against the face.
Sealed Safety Goggles
For improved protection, you can use sealed safety goggles. These feature a rubber or foam seal that fits tightly against the face.
- Prevent dust and debris entering from the sides or above
- Offer better protection than standard safety glasses
- Suitable for dusty environments
Be aware that sealed goggles can sometimes fog up, so ensure they are well ventilated and clean before use.
Full Face Shields
A full face shield provides extended protection for the entire face.
- Covers eyes, nose, and mouth
- Ideal for grinding, cutting, and high-debris tasks
- Adjustable headband with ratchet system for a secure fit
Many face shields can be lifted up when not in use and lowered quickly when required.
Face Shields with Ear Defenders
Some face shields are integrated with ear defenders, offering combined eye, face, and hearing protection.
- Improved stability during use
- Provides hearing protection in noisy environments
- Helps keep the shield securely in place
Although these can feel heavier, they offer excellent protection and reduce movement while working.
Layered Protection
In higher-risk situations, it is often good practice to use layered protection.
- Wear sealed goggles underneath a face shield
- Provides a secondary barrier if debris bypasses the shield
This approach significantly reduces the risk of eye injury.
Full Face Respirators
A full face respirator combines respiratory protection with eye and face protection.
- Filters inhaled air
- Protects eyes from dust, debris, and splashes
- Seals fully around the face
This is the highest level of protection for tasks involving dust, fumes, or airborne contaminants.
Choosing the Right Protection
Always select eye and face protection based on the specific hazards involved:
- Flying debris and sparks
- Dust and fine particles
- Fumes or vapours
- Noise levels
Ensure that lenses, visors, and shields are impact-rated and certified for the task. Using unsuitable or low-grade protection can be ineffective and dangerous.
Key Safety Points
- Always wear appropriate eye protection when using machinery
- Upgrade protection as risk increases
- Consider combined or layered protection for high-risk tasks
- Ensure all equipment is correctly rated and well maintained
Choosing the correct eye and face protection is your responsibility and plays a critical role in preventing serious, potentially permanent injuries.
