Using a Full Face Respirator

Full face respirators provide sealed protection around the entire face, protecting both the respiratory system and the eyes. There are many different brands available. While the principles covered here apply to most models, you must always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific respirator you are using.

Pre-Use Checks

Before using a full face respirator, always carry out a thorough inspection:

  • Ensure the respirator is clean, dry, and in good condition.
  • Check the valves, head harness, and visor for cracks, damage, or missing parts.
  • Inspect the filters to confirm they are undamaged, within their expiry date, and suitable for the task.
  • Make sure both filters are the same type and class.

Filter Installation

  • Remove the filters from their packaging and read the instructions first.
  • Line up the arrows on the filter and the mask.
  • Fit each filter by rotating it clockwise with a firm twist until it locks into place.
  • The filter will lock from any starting position as long as it is twisted firmly.
  • To remove a filter, rotate it anti-clockwise.

Fitting the Respirator

  • Loosen all straps before putting the mask on.
  • Ensure you are clean-shaven where the mask seals against the face.
  • Place the mask over your face and pull the head harness over the back of your head.
  • Tighten the bottom straps first, then the middle straps, and finally the top strap.
  • For final adjustment, pull the bottom two straps together, then the middle two, and then the top strap.
  • Check that the head harness sits centrally on the back of your head and that no straps are twisted.

Fit Check

Once the respirator is fitted, a fit check must be carried out:

  • Cover the filter inlets with your hands.
  • Inhale gently.
  • The mask should pull in towards your face and remain collapsed while you hold your breath.
  • If you feel or hear air leaking, readjust the straps and reposition the mask until a tight seal is achieved.

Removing the Respirator

  • Undo the bottom straps first.
  • Lift the mask up and over your head.

Cleaning and Maintenance

After use, the respirator must be cleaned and maintained correctly:

  • Never use solvents, hydrocarbons, acetone, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the mask.
  • Remove the filter assemblies by turning them a quarter-turn to the left.
  • Wash the mask in lukewarm, soapy water or an approved mild cleaning solution.
  • Rinse thoroughly under clean running water.
  • Allow the mask to air dry naturally. Do not use direct heat.
  • Once fully dry, reassemble the respirator in the reverse order.

Storage

Store the respirator in a clean, dry place where it will not be damaged, scratched, or contaminated. Proper storage helps ensure the mask remains effective and ready for safe use.
