Safe Use of Angle Grinders

Angle grinders are powerful and highly versatile tools, but they are also involved in a significant number of workplace accidents each year. Understanding how to use an angle grinder safely is essential for reducing the risk of injury and ensuring work is carried out correctly.

Pre-Use Checks

Before using an angle grinder, always carry out a thorough pre-use inspection. Check that:

  • The grinder is in good condition
  • The guard is fitted securely
  • The correct wheel or disc is installed

For mains-powered grinders, inspect the power cable for cuts or damage. For battery-powered tools, ensure the battery is securely fitted and sufficiently charged.

The Importance of the Guard

The guard is a critical safety feature on an angle grinder. It must always be fitted and positioned between you and the rotating disc to deflect sparks, dust, and debris away from your body.

Never remove, loosen, or modify the guard, even temporarily. Doing so significantly increases the risk of serious injury.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Always wear appropriate PPE when using an angle grinder. This will usually include:

  • Safety goggles or a full face shield
  • Hearing protection
  • Gloves (where suitable)
  • Respiratory protection when dust is generated

Avoid loose clothing, tie back long hair, and remove jewellery to reduce the risk of entanglement.

Correct Handling and Positioning

Before switching on the grinder, hold it firmly with both hands. Angle grinders produce strong torque when starting, and single-handed use greatly increases the risk of losing control.

Stand in a stable position and ensure the work area is clear. Keep others well away from the working area and always check what is behind the cutting or grinding line.

Starting and Using the Grinder

When starting the grinder, allow it to reach full speed before contacting the workpiece. Never begin cutting or grinding while the disc is still accelerating.

Once at full speed:

  • Apply the disc gently
  • Do not force the tool
  • Avoid excessive pressure

The disc should do the work at its designed cutting or grinding rate.

Using the Correct Disc

Always use the correct disc for the task:

  • Cutting discs are for straight cutting only and must never be side-loaded
  • Grinding discs are thicker and designed to withstand grinding pressure

Using the wrong disc is a common cause of disc failure and accidents.

Managing Kickback and Sparks

Kickback can occur if the disc snags in the material, forcing the tool suddenly in the opposite direction. A firm two-handed grip and a stable stance help control this risk.

Always be aware of the direction of sparks and debris. Direct them away from yourself, other people, and any flammable materials.

Responding to Problems

If the grinder begins to vibrate excessively, wobble, or make unusual noises, stop immediately. Switch off the tool and wait for the disc to stop completely before investigating.

Never attempt to slow a spinning disc with your hand or by pressing it against another surface.

Shutting Down Safely

When you have finished the task, switch off the grinder and maintain control until the disc has come to a complete stop.

Never place an angle grinder down while the disc is still spinning, as it may move unexpectedly or catch on nearby objects.
