we know that personal protective equipment is important and though indeed to wear it but what about in a real world why is PPE important in this video we discuss PPE with a health and safety expert it's your last line of defense there are many mechanical improvements that have been made over the years there are many changes to practices in the way that we work and all of those are absolutely vital to make sure that you stay safe at some point in your work in life you are likely to come into contact with a chemical you are likely to be in a situation where you need a hardhat you are likely to be in situations where you need glasses on so the rules on PPE are clear it's important for the wearer's for instance you can walk around a chemical site and you might say well there are very few hazards that are going to cause a problem for me why do I need to wear a hard hat on walking around a tank farm or I'm walking through distillation columns there's unlikely to be anything falling from my height well we've had occasions where we get golf balls coming across into the refinery because there's a golf course next door now I'm not saying anybody's actually been hit by one but it's a it's a freak of nature that could happen the other thing with with eye protection and what we found is because over the years things have become a lot less chunky and it's almost designer eyewear now and and people find that that PPE is not only comfortable but it's easy to use and they actually enjoy wearing it and a particular instance is the there's the simple glasses that will protect your eyes from impact and also from things like flying pieces of grit if you get a windy day these are ever so easy to wear ever so easy to use and and they come in a variety of colors and people actually look quite cool whether wearing them so it becomes a bit more of a pleasure and and after all they're protecting your eyes which we know is really really important so yeah always wear your PPE because it's the last line of defense why is it important to make sure it's maintained and you check it before you use it it is important to make sure it's maintained and maintained is maybe maybe a stronger word than this props is necessary because it's more a case of making sure there are no obvious cracks or obvious flaws in what you're wearing make sure you know it's it's PPE the basic PPA the hardhat the the eyes the gloves all of these things should be provided free of charge by your employer if you are required those as part of your day to day job they're relatively cheap they're relatively inexpensive if you ever got any kind of concerns at all particularly with clubs where you might not be able to see the fact that they are now porous and when they when you put them on originally they were not and just replace them high protection and you know pence its pence to protect your eyes but it's an awful long time in life without your eyesight so yeah really important to wear should be maintained should be checked any any scratches any stickers that people people love putting stickers on helmets for some obscure reason and take them off give that give the helmet a wipe change it every three years these are typical things that you wouldn't be expected to do as part of your maintaining your PPE and it's provided for your protection you have a duty to wear it if it's provided for reasons of health and safety so it's in your own interest to make sure it's doing that protection job and the only way that's going to work as if it's well-maintained and and it and it's available to do the job it should do it also important to make sure that they wear the right size of their cloud for absolute face fields absolutely absolutely yeah this is another another area that's really important and obvious really but if you're if you if your hard hat is sitting on top of your head or it's um or it's it's actually down covering your eyes I uh you know we've been around the industry long enough to have seen these things but if it doesn't fit then it could fall off the right that exactly the moment is supposed to actually be doing its job because it's going to be an emergency or a difficult situation where you're going to need the PPE to sit where it is to do its job so yeah it has to be the correct fit and again you know it's not difficult to go back to the supplier and say you know we want a different size hat or we need a different size glove this is very easy
Understanding the Crucial Role of PPE in Workplace Safety
This guide, informed by a health and safety expert, explores why Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a vital part of workplace safety.
PPE as the Last Line of Defense
PPE acts as the final barrier between workers and potential workplace hazards, such as chemical exposure or physical injury.
Examples of PPE Necessity
- Hard hats in areas with potential falling objects, even unlikely ones like golf balls from nearby courses.
- Eye protection to guard against flying debris, which has become more user-friendly and aesthetically appealing over time.
Regular Maintenance and Inspection of PPE
Consistently checking PPE for any damage or flaws is crucial to ensure its effectiveness in protection.
Accessibility and Replacement of PPE
- PPE should be provided by employers and is typically inexpensive, but invaluable for safety.
- Regular replacement of PPE, like changing helmets every three years, is essential.
Correct Sizing and Fit of PPE
Ensuring PPE fits correctly is fundamental for it to function effectively in critical situations.
Adjusting PPE to Individual Needs
- Workers should request adjustments or replacements if PPE does not fit properly to ensure maximum protection.
