Driving at Work: Why It Matters
Driving at work is one of the most important health and safety issues in the workplace. It is consistently one of the highest-risk activities carried out for work, and more people are killed or seriously injured while driving for work than during any other work-related activity.
Because of this, employers must manage driving risks in the same way as any other workplace hazard. Road risk should never be treated as separate from health and safety responsibilities.
What Counts as Driving at Work?
Driving at work involves far more than company cars and vans. Any journey made for work purposes is classed as driving at work, regardless of who owns the vehicle.
This includes:
- Visiting clients or customers
- Travelling between work sites
- Making deliveries or collections
- Transporting tools, equipment, or materials
- Responding to callouts or emergencies
If the journey is required as part of your job, it counts as driving at work.
The Purpose of This Course
The aim of this course is to provide you with the essential knowledge needed to drive safely for work. It applies whether you drive occasionally or spend much of your working day on the road.
Throughout the course, we will cover:
- Legal responsibilities for employers and drivers
- Vehicle safety checks and maintenance
- Journey planning and managing fatigue
- Safe driving behaviours
- What to do if something goes wrong
Why Managing Driving Risk Is So Important
Driving at work carries real and significant risks. Poor planning, unsafe behaviour, vehicle defects, or fatigue can quickly lead to serious incidents.
Understanding these risks, and knowing how to control them, helps to:
- Protect you as the driver
- Keep passengers safe
- Reduce risks to other road users
Safe driving is a workplace safety responsibility, not just a road traffic issue.
