Learning Outcome 1
Understand the principles of emergency first aid.
LO1.1 Explain the aims and priorities of first aid.
LO1.2 Identify how to protect yourself and others when responding to an emergency.
LO1.3 Explain how to access the emergency medical services and the information that should be provided.
LO1.4 Explain the importance of acting quickly during a medical emergency.
Learning Outcome 2
Be able to assess and manage an emergency incident.
LO2.1 Demonstrate how to conduct a primary survey using the DRCABCDE approach.
LO2.2 Assess a casualty's airway and breathing.
LO2.3 Demonstrate how to place an unconscious breathing casualty into the recovery position.
LO2.4 Recognise when a casualty requires immediate emergency assistance.

Be able to provide basic life support.
LO3.1 Recognise the signs of cardiac arrest.

The Girlguiding 8 Hour First Response course is a practical, instructor-led first aid programme designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise and respond to a wide range of medical emergencies. Through a combination of interactive teaching, practical demonstrations and hands-on assessments, learners develop the ability to assess incidents safely, provide immediate first aid and support a casualty until the emergency services arrive.
During the course, learners explore the principles of first aid, personal safety, infection prevention and incident management before progressing to life-saving skills including the primary survey (DRCABCDE), the recovery position, adult and child CPR, safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and the management of choking and drowning emergencies. Practical scenarios are incorporated throughout the programme to build confidence and reinforce key techniques.
The course also covers the recognition and treatment of common injuries and medical emergencies, including serious bleeding, shock, fractures, burns, head and spinal injuries, dental injuries, asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, epileptic seizures, stroke, sepsis and temperature-related illnesses. Learners are also introduced to the management of environmental emergencies such as snake bites and tick bites, ensuring they are prepared to respond effectively in a variety of situations.
On successful completion, learners receive a ProTrainings certificate together with access to a range of digital learner resources, including a downloadable student manual, CPD certificate, video resources and ongoing learning materials through the ProTrainings learner portal.
This course comes with 6.0 hours of CPD, although the time to complete the course online may be less than this.
The content of this and all our courses has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines and come with a Certified CPD Statement as well as a ProTrainings Certificate and for online courses an Evidence Based Learning statement.
