How Adrenaline Auto-Injectors Work: Jext and EpiPen Demonstration
Adrenaline auto-injectors are life-saving devices used during severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. In this demonstration, we look at how devices such as the Jext Auto-Injector and EpiPen deliver adrenaline and how their built-in safety features help reduce sharps risks after use.
Understanding How an Auto-Injector Delivers Adrenaline
To help visualise how an adrenaline auto-injector works, this demonstration shows the discharge of the device through a fine mesh. This allows learners to see:
- How the needle is activated
- The speed and force of adrenaline delivery
- How medication is injected into the muscle
- The safety mechanism that protects the needle after use
This is a controlled demonstration for training purposes only and must never be attempted by members of the public.
Jext Auto-Injector Demonstration
The demonstration begins with the Jext Auto-Injector.
When pressure is applied against the thigh area, the needle is automatically activated and the adrenaline medication is delivered rapidly into the muscle.
After the injection has been given, the needle safety system activates as the device is removed. A protective cover moves into place, helping to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries and accidental contact with the needle.
EpiPen Demonstration
The demonstration also includes the EpiPen Auto-Injector.
As pressure is applied, the device activates and adrenaline is delivered quickly through the needle into the muscle.
Once removed, the orange needle cover automatically extends, fully covering the needle. This important safety feature helps reduce the risk of sharps injuries following administration.
Why Auto-Injector Safety Features Matter
Adrenaline auto-injectors are designed to be both effective and safe to use in an emergency.
Modern devices include built-in safety systems to:
- Protect the user after injection
- Reduce the risk of accidental needle injury
- Make the device safer to handle after use
- Support rapid emergency treatment during anaphylaxis
Important Safety Reminder
This demonstration is provided for educational purposes only. Never test, discharge or experiment with an adrenaline auto-injector yourself unless instructed by a healthcare professional or using an approved training device.
In a real emergency, always follow the instructions for the prescribed device and dial 999 immediately if anaphylaxis is suspected.
