This legislation places a new legal requirement on certain public venues and organisations to take proactive steps in preventing and preparing for terrorist attacks. Is your business ready?<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Martyn\u2019s Law?<\/h2>\n<p>Martyn\u2019s Law is named in memory of <strong>Martyn Hett<\/strong>, one of the 22 people killed in the Manchester Arena bombing. His mother, Figen Murray, campaigned tirelessly for stronger legislation to ensure that venues and public spaces take reasonable steps to keep the public safe from terrorist threats.<\/p>\n<p>The law aims to ensure that those responsible for publicly accessible locations (PALs) are prepared to respond effectively to potential attacks. This includes everything from emergency evacuation plans to <strong>staff training and counter-terrorism awareness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Does Martyn\u2019s Law Apply To?<\/h2>\n<p>Martyn\u2019s Law applies to a wide range of venues and organisations in the UK that have \u201cpublicly accessible locations\u201d such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Entertainment venues<\/li>\n<li>Shops and shopping centres<\/li>\n<li>Places of worship<\/li>\n<li>Sports stadiums and arenas<\/li>\n<li>Educational institutions<\/li>\n<li>Healthcare facilities<\/li>\n<li>Hospitality venues and nightclubs<\/li>\n<li>Transport hubs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The law will apply to premises with a capacity of 100 people or more (Standard tier), and 800 or more (Enhanced tier), each with specific duties to comply with.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are Your Legal Duties Under Martyn\u2019s Law?<\/h2>\n<p>The proposed law sets out five key requirements:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Undertake a terrorism risk assessment<\/strong> \u2013 Identify potential threats and vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implement mitigation measures<\/strong> \u2013 Physical, procedural, and training-based.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Train staff appropriately<\/strong> \u2013 Ensure employees know how to respond in the event of an attack.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have a clear response plan<\/strong> \u2013 Including lockdown or evacuation procedures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooperate with local authorities<\/strong> \u2013 Share information and work collaboratively to enhance preparedness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Failure to comply may result in enforcement action, civil penalties, and reputational damage.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Staff Training Is Essential<\/h2>\n<p>People are the first line of defence.
